Establishing a new business is a daunting task. What about establishing a new business during a recession? Impossible?

Opening a new business is easy, but establishing the life-giving roots for a successful business during a recession is like planting an orchard of trees on concrete. The volume of work, dedicated time, energy, effort and financial resources can easily be overwhelming and discourage even the smartest of humans. It is critical to maintain an optimistic outlook and positive self talk while remaining focused on methods of achieving the goals for your organization. I have found that true entrepreneurs possess a strong sense of perseverance that drives their sense of purpose.
Thomas Edison is quoted as saying, "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."

NOTE. Here are a few personal demonstrations of my inner perseverance:

  • 2006 - 2008 - Residential Real Estate
  • 2006 - 2008 - takeURpicture.com: Real Estate Virtual Tour Production Company
  • 2009 - gnudoor.com: Website Hosting, Management and Design

Operating a business in today's digital world

There are a few low cost technical elements that are elementry to meet today and tomorrow's customer expectations.

  1. Establish a website that provides your customers with interaction and information to do business with you.
  2. Establish a social media presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as a minimum. Utilizing these digital media outlets enable you the ability to share information, pricing, discounts, coupons, and real-time updates. One of the most important aspects is the ability for your loyal customer base to share your information with their sphere of influence... because they like what you do for them.
  3. Enroll your organization in relevant directory listings. Sometimes this means joining organizations and other times it is as simple as filling out a company profile that will be displayed to potential customers seeking your services/products.

Find a niche

During times of recession, it is more critial than ever to find the markets that will support the products and services you offer. Knowing and educating about how your wares can improve the personal or professional quality of life is essential. One aspect to investigate is how your products/services will improve an existing company's marketshare. Providing subcontractor services to well established businesses could easily provide the 'edge' they are needing over their competition.

Why? How? What?

Seems like obvious questions to most, but if you eliminate financial reasons for going into business, what are you left with? What gets you out of bed in the morning? What is your purpose? Here are three questions that anyone in your organization should be able to answer at a moment's notice.

  • Why do you do what you do?
  • How do you do what you do?
  • What do you do?

Most businesses communicate: what they do, how they do it and why they do it, but following successful companies you will notice they provide information in the reverse order: WHY they do what they do and then HOW they do it and then WHAT it is that they do. Not only is it important to define your business, but it is equally important to communicate your business in the proper way.
"People don't buy what you do. People buy why you do it." ~Simon Sinek

From one entrepreneur to another, the journey to successful business ownership is a road less traveled, but if you possess the perseverance to blaze your own trail, the rewards of your risk taking are well worth the struggles of being true to who you are. The question becomes, are you a true entrepreneur? Do you really have what it takes?
